The Research and Science Behind Vinpocetine

Updated on March 23, 2015

Vinpocetine is derived from the periwinkle plant, Vinca minor. The ingredient has a track record of usage, primarily in European countries, as a cognitive protective and anti-aging agent. Vinpocetine is commonly referred to as a Nootropic compound with research showing promise that it may promote memory formation.

How Does Vinpocetine Work to Improve Mental Function?

Vinpocetine is an alkaloid vincamine derivative. Vinpocetine has been shown in numerous studies to possess many of the same actions as vincamine, however, the risk of side effects is much lower. For improving memory and cerebral circulation, vinpocetine is up to twice as potent, making it more effective, per current research.

Vinpocetine acts on the blood flow in the brain, the brain's blood vessels and the brain cells. It works to ensure that all of these components are functioning optimally so that the brain gets the nutrients and oxygen that it requires for maximum health. This also works to prevent damage, and in some cases, even reverse it. The reason this supplement is so effective is because vinpocetine is able to cross the blood-brain barrier, ensuring that it works directly on the brain and its structures.

It helps to prevent the blood vessels from narrowing and contracting by reducing intracellular calcium levels due to containing the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 1. Inhibiting the calcium ensures that the blood vessels are relaxed so that blood flows through without disruption. It also decreases the stickiness, or viscosity, of the blood due to its antioxidant properties. If someone has narrowed blood vessels in the brain, this function ensures that adequate blood flow still occurs.

What Benefits are Associated with Regular Vinpocetine Use?

Vinpocetine is used all throughout the world, particularly in Europe, Korea, Japan and China. It possesses immense medical benefits for brain-related health due to ensuring adequate blood flow to all areas of the brain. This supplement improves brain health and function in four main ways, including:

  • Increasing the brain's blood circulation
  • Improving how the brain uses oxygen
  • Increasing the creation of stored energy in the cells of the brain
  • Improving how well the brain metabolizes glucose

Vinpocetine helps to improve memory, recall of information, focus, ability to think, concentration and the ability to learn. It works to help people to improve and maintain their brain function to prevent cognitive decline in the future. These benefits ensure that someone's ability to think, learn and make decisions is optimal and that they do not decline with age. It is widely used to reduce the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia. It may also slow down the progression of dementia-related diseases.

Vinpocetine is well-known for helping to improve cognitive function. These benefits include:

  • Enhancing both short-term and long-term memory
  • Working as a neuroprotector to protect overall brain health and function
  • Reducing senile cerebral dysfunction
  • Increasing awareness, alertness and preparedness
  • Reversing or preventing damage to the brain, liver, muscles and other organs of the body due to lack of oxygen

Does Vinpocetine Benefit Other Aspects of Health?

While the primary benefits of vinpocetine are for brain and cognitive function, it has many other uses described in research throughout the world. In acting on the brain, it can improve both visual and hearing function. Visual function benefits include:

  • Improving night vision
  • Increasing how quickly eye wounds heal, particularly when the wounds are related to a burn
  • Improving age-related macular degeneration

The hearing benefits include:

  • Alleviating hearing loss
  • Alleviating dizziness and vertigo
  • Alleviating buzzing and ringing in the ears

Study on Effects of Vinpocetine on Memory

An increase in acute memory formation was noted in healthy normal female volunteers between the ages of 25-40.

The change of effect was statistically significant (p-value < 0.05). The Trial was a Double Blind and the Length of the study was 1-7 Days. You can read the full study yourself through The U.S. National Library of Medicine

Study on Effects of Vinpocetine on Cognitive Decline

A decrease in cognitive decline and an increase in subjective well-being was noted in both genders of 1011 subjects.

The change of effect was statistically significant (p-value < 0.05). The study also saw statistically significant improvement for participants' scores on the Tinnetti scale (p<0,001) and the MMSE (p<0,001). The Trial was a Case-Control Study and the Length of the study was 1-6 Months. You can read the full study yourself through The U.S. National Library of Medicine
